This morning I spent a few hours with some leaders who are facing very challenging times in their company. The competitive environment is extremely tough, margins are thin, and the budget is stretched tight. People are on the edge of burnout from the unknowns and stress involved. Yet that's not the challenge these leaders are most concerned about.
"How do we help our senior leaders understand the impact of their behavior? Sure, our situation is pretty lousy - yet our biggest challenge is the low morale we have to deal with. And morale continues to take hits from how our leaders are and are not showing up."
We spent some time together working through a process that surfaces and aligns the needs of the business, the senior leaders, and finally of the leaders in the room. The group was able to create a set of cascading needs that they can present to their leaders to get the support to make a bigger difference.
Of course, coming up with the list is just the first step. Next is arranging the discussion(s) to enlist their leaders' help in doing a better job achieving the business goals.
